Frequently Asked Questions
Why do hackers attack sites?
A lot of website owners believe that hackers want to take over their website just to spite the owner and rip out their business from under their feet. While there is some truth in that, it’s not entirely true. There are two main reasons someone might want to hack into your website:
- They want to spread malicious information across the web that can infect other sites and people’s computers, allowing them to obtain personal information.
- They want to get access to private data stored on your websites, such as your content, user information, mailing lists, credit card information, your mailing address, and whatever other private information you might store.
My site is small. Am I at risk of being hacked?
Unfortunately, if you have any sort of online presence, you’re at risk of hackers wanting information. The harsh reality of the internet is that no one is entirely safe. But let this sink in; since you aren’t one of the larger websites, you might be at an even greater risk since you don’t have a cutting-edge security team to protect your website against a hack or cyber attack.
How will you keep my website safe?
There are plenty of things I would be able to do in order to keep your site as secure as possible. One of the first things I would do is make sure your plugins and theme are up-to-date. After confirming everything is continually updated, I would do some security things like hiding your login dashboard, backing up site files, setting up failed login attempts to notify us if someone is trying to breach, and the list goes on!
Why is WordPress a target for hackers?
Think of WordPress like the Facebook of the website world. According to studies done, 1/3 of all websites are powered by WordPress. Since so many users are using WordPress to build their website, why wouldn’t a hacker want to target users who use this popular content management system (CMS).
Since WordPress is an open source piece of software for web designers, there are a lot of loopholes that allow a hacker to get in. One of the most popular ways I have seen is by installing corrupted themes and plugins.
Will I be locked into a contract?
You know what I hate more than raw onions? Contracts!
